Construction Staking

Before the first brick is laid or the foundation is poured, every construction project begins with an essential step: Construction Staking.

Construction staking is the process of marking the exact location on the land where proposed structures will be built, based on approved site plans. This ensures that construction aligns with legal boundaries, zoning regulations, and architectural design.

This step is not only crucial for accuracy, but it also helps avoid costly mistakes, delays, and legal issues. Whether you're building a home, a commercial space, or a multi-unit development, construction staking sets the foundation for a successful project.

But what exactly happens during the staking process? Here's a step-by-step overview:

The Construction Staking Process

1. Lot Staking + Excavation Layout

The process begins by marking the perimeter of the lot and identifying where the proposed structure will go. These markings serve as a guide for the excavation team to dig in the correct areas.

2. Staking Footings

After excavation is completed, the field crew returns to mark the location of the foundation footings. This ensures that the foundation footings are built exactly where they should be, following the approved plans.

3. Pinning Footings

Once the contractor pours concrete at the base, the field crew pins or marks the concrete footings. This step is critical to ensure that the foundation walls are placed accurately on top of the footings.

  1. As-Built for Foundation

The final step is to produce an as-built drawing of the foundation. This drawing verifies that the foundation was constructed according to the approved design and complies with municipal regulations.

At the time the foundation as-built is completed, the excavation has not yet been backfilled. This allows the team to clearly inspect and confirm the position of the foundation.
